For the second year in a row, the Open Doors Days initiative “Take a Peek”, organized by the Central Project Management Agency, invites everyone to explore a modern, sustainable, and European Lithuania. As part of this series, 12 sites across Lithuania that have benefited from EU investments will open their doors to the public.

On May 3, not only will the Railway Museum open its doors for free, but it will also offer two special guided tours with unique guides! During the tours, you’ll discover the behind-the-scenes story of the museum’s creation presented by the project’s architect, Darius Baliukevičius, and learn about the history and significance of railways in Lithuania.

Schedule:

  • 11:00–12:00 – A walk through the museum with the modernization architect

  • 13:00–14:00 – A general guided tour of the Railway Museum

  • 10:00–18:00 – Free museum admission (self-guided visits)

Please note: The guided tours are free of charge, but registration is required due to limited space.

About the walk through the museum with the modernization architect

Join architect Darius Baliukevičius on a tour of the Railway Museum he designed. He will share the core ideas behind the exhibition and how they are reflected in the space — why the museum is filled with color and reflections, what was emphasized and what was left unsaid, why the Childhood Station feels like Christmas, Virbalis Station resembles a palace, and why birds sing in the Signal Station. To make the tour even more engaging, Darius will share behind-the-scenes stories, quirky details, and answer your questions.

About the general guided tour of the Railway Museum

Since the first train arrived in Vilnius on September 4, 1860, Lithuania’s railway history has seen many important changes. The evolution of the railway has deeply influenced the history of the entire country: passengers changed, new travel routes emerged, new stations were built, signaling rules and equipment evolved. Railways helped break Lithuania’s isolation, attracting new investments and boosting trade.

This guided tour will introduce you to the key developments, events, and phenomena in Lithuanian railway history.
