LTGUkrainian citizens will be able to travel by train in Lithuania free of charge
In response to Russia’s war against Ukraine and to help people fleeing the horrors of war, companies of the Lithuanian Railways Group (“Lietuvos geležinkeliai” – LTG) are starting to provide assistance. From March 1, the passenger transport company LTG Link has offered Ukrainian citizens free transportation on local routes in Lithuania. Ukrainian citizens who wish to take advantage of the free travel will only need to present a Ukrainian passport or ID card, and children – a birth certificate.
In order to resolve the problem as quickly as possible and to simplify train travel as much as possible, free single tickets will be issued on trains or at ticket offices.
“We stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and are looking for concrete solutions to support them in this extremely difficult time. With this initiative, we aim to help people who have already arrived in Lithuania to reach places of refuge and travel around the country. People who want to integrate into Lithuanian society will also be able to use free intercity transport: they will be able to travel to work, to educational institutions or to different cities in Lithuania for other purposes by train. Currently, the closest train station to the Lithuanian-Polish border is Marijampole railway station, which is just under 33 km from the border crossing point,” says Linas Baužys, head of LTG Link.
The company invites people to share this information with both those traveling to the Lithuanian-Polish border to help Ukrainian residents get to Lithuania, and with Ukrainian citizens who are currently looking for a solution on how to safely get to the territories of Lithuania.
As part of this initiative, Ukrainian citizens will also be able to transport pets, including large animals that do not fit in special containers, as well as hand luggage, free of charge.
